between the ground and the ladder is 0.4. The coefficient of static friction between the wall and the ladder is 0.25. The painter has a mass of 55kg and is currently 8m in the air. Assume that the ladder is 14.1m long,
rests at an angle of 45¬° to the wall, and has
a mass of 10kg acting at the center of gravity
in the middle of the ladder.
(1) How far is the painter from
the wall?
Since the angle between the ladder and
the wall is 45¬°, the ladder must hit the
wall at 10m in the air, and the base of the
ladder must rest 10m from the wall. If the
painter is 8m in the air, by similar
triangles she must also be at a
perpendicular distance of 8m from the
base of the ladder. She is therefore 2m
from the wall.
